Formal Writing Assignments

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS

While reading  “Nobody Mean More to Me Than You” by  June Jordan a part of this essay that was eye-opening to me was “But then we approach our maturity inside a larger social body that will not support our efforts to become anything other than the clones of those who are neither our mothers nor our fathers. We begin to grow up in a house where every true mirror shows us the face of somebody who does not belong there, whose walk and whose talk will never look or sound “right,”. I found this quote meaningful because of how most people of color feel as if they sound a certain way they are looked at differently whether it’s their community or an outside community point of view Most people resort to code switches to fit into multiple different cultures groups. And I found that interesting because of how so much realized after reading this that the majority of the world code swaps so much to a certain degree that they wouldn’t even notice, to a point where it is just average and the author/writer puts emphasis on put part cause of how much it happens within the black community. What I could incorporate in writing is blending real overlooked issues in my writing to convey the reader/audience to understand the point of my writing. A word I learned while reading is invariant and it means to never change which is a massive part of what this essay is about in all reality.

Response to Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue.”

While reading the essay on Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” the part I found most resonating was the quote “ Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as ‘broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness”. The reason why I could relate to this part is that I used to live with my grandma and was used to speaking a mixture of English and Spanish, She would mess up on a lot of English words or forget them because Spanish is her first language, so I would have to help her translate. Amy Tan was talking about her mother and she spoke English which resonated with me a lot and my life. Her thesis was That she could learn different terms from other media such as Books, People, Schools, etc. She would be able to gain a better knowledge of English and perfect it. She would show the readers all the new terms of how to express themselves compared to the way she would have before with her broken English and how much her broken English limited her to certain words/terms, This would also show the readers how to learn different ways of how to speak English even if was or wasn’t their first language. The essay would create a type of rhetorical feature because she shows light on how people with broken English aren’t always encouraged to perfect a second language and she just wanted to spread knowledge and awareness to how common it is.

Response to the Moore Article

While reading this article what I found interesting was how he was able to blend his writing style with Scientific facts to make this article more compelling and interesting for me to read. I found the rhetorical feature of persuasion most important because of how you need persuasion to bring in your writing and to actually believe your points so that they can contain a different point of view on the topic you dealing with and how to approach it or what to expect during that topic, I also found confidence important to because you also have to believe in what your writing about or talking about, it would lead to a lot of people not find your sourcing reliable.

I said studying too because I suck at it and want to work on it.

Response to “Only Daughter”

“But the truth is, I wanted him to interrupt. I wanted my father to understand what it was I was scribbling, to introduce me as “My only daughter, the writer.” Not as “This is only my daughter. She teaches.” Es maestra— teacher. Not even profesora.”

I found while reading this that Sandra was trying so hard to make her father understand the difference between her and her brother, she came out as a writer to her father and wanted her father to understand the choice she made in her life. A connection I see is the theme of acceptance and how it could push certain people to do certain things whether it’s to better yourself or make a bad decision to gain acceptance. This could relate to a lot of people with one parent because you see your parents as someone you always want to see in your good moments, and when you feel as if your parent is overlooking you in that way sometimes it would push you to try more things to get their attention. Going back to what I said, this would push you towards different decisions whether it its for the better or worse, In the book Sandra wanted to see her in a way that separated her from the other 6 brothers. She saw her father as just one of her other brothers, which pushed her to become a writer/author so her father could finally be proud of her and that could be her reason for trying to justify her trying so hard for her father’s love.
